L A N D S C A P E S
The American West is a beautiful, scenic, and spirited place. It is my home and the setting for my adventures. Through my travels, stays, adventures, I soak in the spirit of the American West, and feel so inspired to paint it and share it with others. There are places like no others in the world. Truly a destination for the soul. The paintings I create are fueled and embodied by that Western Spirit, by that sense of adventure, awe, and wonder. The pieces encourage others to connect with the landscapes, join in awe, to breathe in and live that spirit that exists here in the American West.
To take part in the adventure, to know thy soul, to have that setting of expanse and curiosity.
Alpine Series: Aspen
EJ resides in the Roaring Fork Valley, home to Aspen, Colorado. This historic mountain is his home base for his adventures. The Alpine Series starts at home; showing a beautiful sunset and alpine glow from the mountains in deep maroons, rosey-violets, against the cool blues of shade and the earthy deep sage tones in the shadows at the base.
This piece has been shown in group shows in Aspen and currently on display at Aspen Chapel Gallery.
Alpine Series: Moab
The second piece in the Alpine Series is of Moab. A short jaunt from the Roaring Fork Valley, Moab is a local’s escape for mud season and desert adventures. Once the snow melts in April and May, the locals need a place to play. The crags, the towers, the river, and the canyons are excellent places for the adventurers to spend May away. Soaking up the sun while the Rocky Mountains warm up for their return to summer.
This painting captures the sunset against the La Sals, still covered in snow, while the heat begins to radiate from the towers and desert crags below. All balancing with a big beautiful bright cloud that only enhances the desert sunset.
Elevations
Elevations in architecture are flattened facades. The practice allows us to see from one side all the planes together as one. All the surfaces composed, it helps us read and study the building and it’s relation to the context, the site, it’s neighbors. Elevations is a series dedicated to the practice of understanding the landscape, it’s features, its many planes, and it’s context, how it sits between the earth and the sky.
